The basics
Process: C-41 colour negative
Speed: ISO 200
Look: Features a noticeable, traditional medium-to-coarse analogue grain structure that adds character without completely destroying fine details
Format: 35mm, 24 or 36 exposures, 120 film
Best For
Sunny days, travel, street photography, and casual portraits
Kodak Gold 200 is one of those films that just feels like summer. It's an affordable, daylight-balanced colour negative film (C-41, ISO 200) with fine grain and rich, saturated colour, and it comes in 35mm (24 or 36 exposures) as well as 120, so it'll happily go in a medium format camera too.
The look is all warm yellows, golden tones and deep reds, with that classic sun-kissed glow that makes everything feel a bit nostalgic. It's also really forgiving, so if you're a stop or so over or under it'll usually cope just fine (handy when you're shooting quickly and the light meter's having a moment).
Next to Kodak Ultramax 400 it looks cleaner in bright light, and whilst Portra will give you softer contrast and more neutral skin tones, Gold has a character all of its own. Sunny days, travel, street photography and casual portraits are where it really shines.
